Digital Collection:
The Rousanou Holy Monastery codices were written between the 13th and 19th centuries. They contain Liturgies, Pleas, Ecclesiastical texts, Gospels, Speeches by Holy Fathers, Doctrines, etc.
Systematical studies of the manuscripts were first carried out in early 20th century by Byzantine scholar Nikos Veis (1883-1958), who was the first to access the monastery on October 4, 1908. In December 1909, Veis had recorded 52 manuscripts with the help of Fathers Chrysanthos Athanasios (Rousanou Monastery) and Ayathaggelos Petropoulos (Holy Trinity Monastery). Since the Rousanou monastery was semi-abandonded, fourty-four manuscripts were transferred to neighboring Holy Trinity Monastery and later to St. Stefanos Monastery.
During the German Occupation (1941-1944), secretary of the Holy Metropolis of Trikala and Stagon Father Christos Bentas (1883-1979), a Kalambaka resident, salvaged the manuscripts by hiding them in crypts or transferring them to safety. The manuscripts carry Benta’s enumeration.
In 1985, Ionian University professor and Director of the Research Center for Medieval and Modern Hellenism of the Academy of Athens, Mr. Dimitris Sofianos assumed the project of methodically listing the Rousanou manuscripts. His work was finished in December 2007 and published in 2009 – a year after his passing. The descriptive cataloguing of the manuscripts was based on the index created by professor Sofianos.
On March 20, 2009, a hundred years after Nikos Veis’s first recording of the manuscripts, the forty codices were transferred from St. Stefanos to Rousanou, where they are kept.
In February 2019, the Kalambaka Library in co-operation with the Historical and Paleographical Archive of the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece, undertook the project of “Digitization, Administration and Cataloguing of the Rousanou Holy Monastery Manuscript Collection.” The aim of this project is to digitally preserve these cultural heritage artefacts and make them available to the academic community.
