Topic: Artificial Intelligence Meets the World of Archives
Archives constitute fundamental sources of information and core elements of cultural heritage. In today’s digital environment, their encounter with Artificial Intelligence (AI) creates new opportunities for their management, promotion, and utilization at both national and international levels. In applied archival science, AI can have a wide range of applications, such as document recognition and classification, reading and transcribing manuscripts, restoration of damaged records, transcription of audiovisual material, access management, regulatory compliance, and enhancement of archival security. However, the way AI is used may raise issues related to the protection of personal data, bias, and the lack of an adequate regulatory framework. Human oversight and the appropriate training of archivists are therefore essential, so that AI is employed as a tool for knowledge, transparency, and forward-looking development.
