In his lecture, Mr. Tsaousidis will initially examine what Artificial Intelligence is—and, equally importantly, what it is not—while delineating both its capabilities and its inherent limitations. He will subsequently address the anticipated trajectory of AI in the near and more distant future, drawing upon current directions in international research. Furthermore, he will foreground critical vulnerabilities in its practical deployment, such as biased use of data, lack of transparency, limited interpretability, and the infringement of intellectual property and other rights—issues that are particularly difficult to regulate effectively.

The central thesis of the lecture is that Artificial Intelligence constitutes a remarkable scientific and technological achievement with the potential to significantly improve the lives of citizens. Nevertheless, Mr. Tsaousidis argues that, at present, the institutional safeguards required to ensure that AI systems consistently operate in the public interest remain insufficient.
(Note: These themes are explored in greater depth in his recent book, Artificial Intelligence – Yes and No, Kleidarithmos Publications, October 2025.)
Vasilis Tsaousidis is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Democritus University of Thrace, specializing in “Software Technologies for Large-Scale, Interconnected and Internet-Based Computer Systems,” and Director of the Laboratory of Programming and Information Processing. He has previously served as a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and at Northeastern University in Boston. He has also been a Visiting Professor at MIT.
