They moved to the United States in 1914 and were married in Lowell, Massachusetts, where they started a family.<\/p>\n<p>Their son, <strong>George Demoulas<\/strong>, loved to see his relatives in Kalambaka He visited often and enjoyed their hospitality. Over the years he helped build the <strong>first high school<\/strong> and the <strong>St. Vassarion church<\/strong>, when the town needed them.<\/p>\n<p>George Demoulas\u2019 daughter, <strong>Diana Demoulas Merriam<\/strong>, inherited her father\u2019s love for Kalambaka. She established the <strong>Kalambaka Educational, Literary and Cultural Civil Not for Profit Company<\/strong> (<strong>KDK<\/strong>) in <strong>2012<\/strong>. Its mission is to provide informational, educational, cultural and recreational services, both traditional and online, to enhance the social, cultural and economic vitality of Kalambaka\u2019 s citizens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KDK<\/strong>\u2019s first project has been to renovate and refurbish the building in the city center that housed the Municipal Library, which comprised just two rooms and a minimal book collection. The renovation was completed and the <strong>Library<\/strong> opened on <strong>July 19, 2015<\/strong> in honor of the birth date of George Demoulas.<\/p>\n<p>Through an agreement with the Municipality, <strong>KDK<\/strong> will manage and operate the new <strong>Library<\/strong> for a minimum of five and up to a maximum of fifteen years, when the Library will revert to the management of the Municipality.<\/p>\n<p>The new <strong>Library<\/strong> is a cultural anchor in the city, with a special focus on the needs of children and teens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kalambaka Library\u2019s<\/strong> logo highlights its commitment to <strong>education, access<\/strong> and <strong>opportunity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Its goals are to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop services tailored to the library users\u2019 needs<\/li>\n<li>Provide <strong>free<\/strong> access to library resources and services using state of the art technology<\/li>\n<li>Offer a place for informal learning and social cohesion<\/li>\n<li>Create an attractive physical environment supported by highly qualified staff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Diana Demoulas Merriam\u2019s vision is for Kalambaka Library to become a hub of creativity and opportunity, preparing the next generation of Kalambakiotes, as well as the population of the surrounding area, to thrive in the global future.<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bea1adc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bea1adc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-f2d445d ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; letter-spacing: 0.4px;\">The Library&#8217;s collection is classified according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System. The printed collection covers various thematic categories and it is constantly enriched with donations and purchases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Children&#8217;s \/ Young Adults&#8217; Department<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The children&#8217;s collection includes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Information material.<\/li>\n<li>Supplementary books on school subjects and educational packages.<\/li>\n<li>Scientific and literary books.<\/li>\n<li>Foreign language books.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adults&#8217; Department <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The adult collection is divided into the <strong>Main Collection<\/strong>, the <strong>Reference Collection<\/strong> and the <strong>Special Collections<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Main Collection<\/strong> includes scientific books of all thematic categories, Greek and foreign literature books as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <b>Reference Collection<\/b> includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Encyclopedias &amp; Dictionaries.<\/li>\n<li>Brochures.<\/li>\n<li>Magazine Collection &amp; Local Press.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><br><\/p>\n<p>This material cannot be borrowed and can be used only in the reading room.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <b>Journals Collection<\/b> consists of titles published in Greece and abroad. The collection includes the award-winning by the Academy of Athens historical magazine <b><em>Thessalian Diary<\/em><\/b>&nbsp;and the scientific journal <em><b>Trikala<\/b><\/em>, an annual philological historical folklore magazine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the <b>Special Collections<\/b>&nbsp;there are available old publications exclusively for studying within the Library. The oldest editions of the Special Collections are the works: <b><em>Athens and Attica: Journal of a Residence There<\/em> <\/b>(1836),<em> <b>On the Social Contract; or, Principles of Political Right<\/b><\/em> by Rousseau, published by Garnier Freres (1873), <b>[<em>Traveling<\/em> <em>Notes of Macedonia, Epirus, the New Boundary Line and Thessaly]<\/em><\/b> by Nikolaos Th. Schinas (1886), as well as the <b>[<\/b><em><b>History of the Greek Nation]<\/b> <\/em>(1896) by Konstantinos Paparigopoulos, a Greek historian, who is considered the founder of modern Greek historiography.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;In addition, the collection includes two copies of the <b>[<em>Rigas\u2019 Charta<\/em> (<em>Map) of Greece<\/em>]<\/b>, one of the most important works of the Modern Greek Enlightenment by Rigas Velestinlis, who was a Greek writer, political thinker and pioneer of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-f2d445d ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; letter-spacing: 0.4px;\">The electronic collection consists of a CD-ROM with educational software for primary school students and students with learning difficulties. The students have the opportunity to consolidate the curriculum through a specially designed series of fun exercises, as the software acts as an adjunct to school teaching.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The training packages are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>I write simply &#8211; I read easily <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An application that is a language development tool for first grades primary school students as well as for students with learning difficulties, parents and language development professionals, such as speech therapists, special educators, and psychologists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Images-Words and Categories<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An educational game for kindergarten and first grades primary school students as well as children with learning difficulties to support their language development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shape, Size, Color, Space<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A language development tool for children who have difficulties in speech and\/or understanding shapes, sizes, colors, space, opposite concepts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dysalex&#8217;s CB-Pom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Funny animated stories about dyslexia.
