Kalambaka Library had the pleasure and the honor to host on Tuesday, January 23, the Emeritus Professor of History and writer Dr. Maria Efthymiou. Dr. Efthymiou was initially guided by the director, Ms. Katsiamani, around the Library premises and was informed about its programs and services. Afterwards, her speech on the strong points of Hellenism in its 3,500 years of recorded history took place at the Divani Meteora Hotel.

The President of KDK, Ms. Katerina Dimoula-Merriam, visibly moved, welcomed Dr. Efthymiou and thanked the public for attending the event.

Dr. Efthymiou began her speech by emphasizing the special importance of the Greek language, which has the precious and rare privilege of being one of only 5 languages, out of the 6,500 official languages spoken today, that have endured for 4,000 years. As he characteristically stated: “Language has given us education, continuity and strength over the centuries”.

Then, in a simple yet profoundly comprehensive speech, he referred to all the important milestones in our history, such as the Balkan Wars, the Macedonian Struggle, the diaspora, seamanship, national resistance, our great moments in commerce and letters reaching up to and today. He emphatically analyzed both the achievements of our country, as well as the dark parts of our history, such as the national division, which are still today a brake on the development of Hellenism.

The speech was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Culture Mrs. Lila Bandeka-Nani, the Deputy Mayor of Tourism-Sports Mrs. Penelope Magoura, representatives of the Holy Monasteries and the Metropolitan of Stagon and Meteora Theoklitos, as well as the Vice President of KDK Mr. Apostolos Iliopoulos.

We would like to thank Ms. Efthymiou for accepting our invitation, as well as the attendees who honored us with their presence.
