The Workshop`s Steps
The theory – 1st Meeting (3 hours)
Starting from pre-cinema optical toys we will navigate in the history of visual media, insisting on the basic principles of cinema. We will learn what is a flipbook, a Zoetrope, a Phenakistoscope, a Thaumatrope, the Magic Lamp … We will learn how we make a moving picture and will try different materials and techniques. Then we will decide the theme of our movie and make the script. We will divide the script into scenes, we will also split into groups and we will begin to create the storyboard (the historical line that will be our guide in the making of the movie). Children may have to finish the storyboard at home, so that they are ready in the second meeting for the shooting.
Action! – 2nd & 3rd Meeting (8 hours)
In groups we begin the process of shooting. We set up our props, we gather all the materials needed, prepare the cameras, the tripods, employ all the imagination and creativity and with a lot of patience and attention we moving things, people, furniture etc. This process takes two meetings, each four hours long. It is a highly creative and enjoyable process where everyone will feel that the hours are not enough! Therefore, the equipment, props and items will be available to participants to use them if they want the intermediate days (after arrangements with the library staff for the availability of premises and equipment). Also, the children, after the second meeting can make shots in their own time and space -if a scene does not bind them to a particular space of the library; and can use their own equipment (camera, mobile, tablet).
Μontage – 4th & 5th Meeting (8 hours)
The 4th and 5th meeting is editing time. We will transfer the shots to the computers and we will learn -by working on it- the video editing program. Each team, in its own computer mounts its own scene. We record the sounds of our movie -wherever needed-or we choose creative commons music. After the completion of the scenes, we assemble them to a movie. We make titles for the start and the end of it.
ITs SHOW TIME!
We project the film, watch it, discuss it, comment it, judge it, evaluate it. We design the promotional communication material for the short movie presentation event in the multimedia hall at a specific date and time. In this celebration the children who participated to the stop motion animation workshop, will receive dvd containing the film, commemorative photos of the creative process and the workshop`s certificate of attendance.
