Educator and author Dimitris I. Konstantinidis will present the speech Epichirisi Panthiras: I Pirpolisi ton Chorion tou Aspropotamou kai tis Orinis Kalambakas ton Oktovrio 1943 [Operation Panther: The burning of the villages of Aspropotamos and Kalambaka in October 1943], on Tuesday 23 October at 6:00 pm.
According to the author:
“Through the publication of anecdotal, until recently, archive and photographic material, I will present one of the largest liquidation operations of the German army during the Second World War. Operation Panther struck a total of about 32 settlements from the Vlachochoria of Pindos and aimed to regain control of the road axes Trikala – Ioannina and Arta – Ioannina, which were controlled by the guerrilla groups of ELAS and EDES respectively. The reason for my research was my participation in politics and current public life issues of my village. So, asking the villagers about the events concerning the destruction of Krania in October 1943, I realized that although more than 60 years have passed since those dramatic events, the memories of the people in the village Krania were selective, influencing opinions and perceptions.”
