On Thursday, December 3, at 6:00 pm, Dionysis Simopoulos, astrophysicist and Director Emeritous of the Eugenides Planetarium, will connect with the Library through the Zoom platform in order to present the topic The Revelation of the Universe.

In our quest to understand the Universe, astronomers try to explore the evolving drama of the sky with the help of our modern instruments. This is a project full of exciting adventures, triumphs and disappointments. A play that has the Universe as a backdrop, actors in the phenomena of the sky and a plot of natural history. Optical telescopes and radio telescopes on the Earth’s surface, as well as our orbital observatories in space, allow us to capture the messages of all the rays of the electromagnetic spectrum coming from the Universe. At the same time, hundreds of spacecraft are studying the various objects of our solar system, while thousands of artificial satellites orbiting the Earth offer us more and more new knowledge. Back on Earth, huge particle accelerators, such as CERN and Fermilab, penetrate inside the atom to reveal to us the secrets of the Universe birth. In recent years, special laboratories, such as LIGO in the USA and VIRGO in Italy, have opened another window in the Universe by studying the gravitational waves from the mergers of neutron stars and black holes in our constant effort to reveal the nature secrets.
